Retaining Diseased Trees as Vertical Habitat

We are often engaged to undertake tree safety assessments, the brief being "is the tree going to harm people or property".  The answer to this question is a matter of "targets": were the tree to fail what might it hit?  Then there is a question assessing the potential risk which the tree might pose where targets exist.  We use the International Society of Arboriculture's Tree Risk Assessment (TRAQ) system (details of which can be seen here: http://www.isa-arbor.com/Credentials/ISA-Tree-Risk-Assessment-Qualification), which uses a qualitative system to score tree risk.   The risk assessment matrix used as part of the TRAQ matrix, is shown below.

The aim through using this system is not to negate all risk (which would require the felling of all trees), but to reduce it to a tolerable, low level.  Although the beech tree noted in the image has a host of decay fungi colonising it's stem and roots, it is in a amenity woodland location with footpaths which can be realigned, so a heavy reduction of the crown to reduce the risk of failure is aesthetically appropriate.

Tree And Landscape Assessment At The United Nations Logistics Base, Brindisi, Italy.

This year we undertook a detailed assessment of trees and landscape management/maintenance practices at the United Nations' logistics base in Brindisi as part of the enhancement of their ISO 14001 processes. Undertaken in partnership with Interface NRM in the UK, we provided an assessment of all of the trees on site, mapping them in GIS and CAD formats, and provided a prioritised contracting schedule to deal with defects identified, as well as providing suggestions to increase the biodiversity of the tree resource.  We also looked at the maintenance of all green spaces on site in terms of mowing regimes, use of mulches and contractor competencies.   Not the usual mix of species we're used to seeing, but all the more interesting for it.
